Mumbles' Promenade — A Fresh Look for a Beloved Seafront
If you haven’t walked the Mumbles promenade recently, you’re in for a treat. After two years of work, the seafront has had a serious glow-up and it really shows. The new-look prom is wider, greener, smarter and frankly just a lot more enjoyable to spend time on. Whether you’re here for a morning coffee run, a lazy afternoon with the kids, or a golden-hour stroll with the whole family, it’s an absolutely gorgeous stretch to explore 3 minutes away from the cottage.
What’s New on the Prom?
The transformation covers roughly a kilometre of seafront, running from Knab Rock (near Verdi’s) up towards Oystermouth Square — so pretty much the whole of the main Mumbles seafront that you’ll want to walk. The changes are immediately obvious, the surface is level and smooth, the width has been opened right up, and there’s genuinely a feeling of space and airiness that wasn’t quite there before.
New seating everywhere. One of the nicest additions is the new seating. There are picnic benches set back from the main path, classic park benches, and clever double-width island seats that give you 360-degree views across Swansea Bay — a lovely nod to the old tram seats that used to run along this route. Pull up a spot on a sunny morning and the views across the bay towards the Mumbles lighthouse are genuinely hard to beat.
Greener than ever. Around 40 new trees have been planted along the length of the prom, alongside native planting and landscaped areas. It already feels lushier and softer than the old grey seafront, and it’ll only get better as everything beds in.
Wider and more accessible. The old prom had a few annoying pinch points where it narrowed quite dramatically. All of that has been sorted — it’s now a consistent width with a proper “share with care” shared path for pedestrians and cyclists, with bike hubs dotted at regular intervals if you fancy cycling a section. Much easier for buggies and anyone with mobility issues too.
New lighting. Smart new dual-arm lighting columns have been installed along the prom, which makes evening walks feel safe and lovely — especially as the sun sets over the bay.
The New Seaview Play Area
This is a big one if you’re coming with kids. A brand-new play area (the Seaview play area) opened in 2025 along the stretch between Southend Gardens and The George pub, with sweeping views straight out over Swansea Bay. It’s made from tough salt-resistant timber (so it’ll be around for a long time!) and features a slide, bouldering walls, a balance trail and a hammock. Kids absolutely love it.
The new play area links directly with the existing Southend Gardens playground next door, so you’ve effectively got an extended, connected family-friendly space to let the little ones run wild. It’s a brilliant spot so bring a picnic, grab a coffee from one of the nearby traders, and settle in. The George pub is just steps away if the adults need a refresh too!
Places to Eat Along the Prom
The great news is that the new prom has brought some brilliant food options right alongside it. Here’s what to look out for as you walk:
Gower Seafood Hut — Now pitched right next to the new Seaview play area, this is one of our absolute favourites and a real Mumbles institution. Chris and Sarah have been winning rave reviews from the Observer, the Sunday Times and the Telegraph for years, and quite rightly. Think popcorn cockles, sweet chilli prawns, soft shell crab baps and perfectly golden plaice goujons. There’s always a queue — it’s worth it.
Foam — A cute Coffee shop right opposite South End gardens.
Verdi’s — The legendary Mumbles institution at the far end of the prom by Knab Rock. A family-run Italian cafe with up to 400 covers (including a huge outdoor terrace), Verdi’s serves homemade pizza, pasta, and up to 30 flavours of freshly churned Italian ice cream every single day. One of those places you simply cannot come to Mumbles without visiting. It’s about a 20-minute walk from the cottage.
Bistrot Pierre at Oyster Wharf — Spacious, family-friendly brasserie with a great kids' menu. About 4 minutes' walk from the cottage. There’s also Croeso Lounge and Prezzo in the same Oyster Wharf development for more casual options.
Gin & Juice — The rooftop bar above Bistrot Pierre has brilliant views and a fun atmosphere. Under-18s are welcome before 9pm! Entrance is tucked next to the Co-op.
Copperfish — Excellent fish and chips at Mumbles Pier, about a 25-minute walk along the prom from the cottage. A proper seaside chippy with great views.
Walking the Prom — Our Tips
The full stretch from Oyster Mouth Wharf (the nearest point to the Cottage) to the Pier take around 30 minutes at a leisurely pace, but with the new play areas, seating spots and food stops, it’s easy to turn this into a relaxed couple of hours.
A few tips to get the most out of it:
- The Land Train runs along the prom at weekends from May to September if little legs need a rest on the way back — a Mumbles classic and the kids love it.
- Morning walks are magical on a clear day — the light across the bay is something else, and the prom is quiet before the day tripper rush.
- Cyclists should note the prom is shared, so keep it friendly and slow around families and kids.
- The Lido and Blackpill park is a further 40 minutes walk from Oyster Mouth Wharf towards Swansea, there’s a great cafe and park there too.
Mumbles promenade is genuinely one of the most enjoyable things about staying in Mumbles. It’s beautiful, it’s functional, and it’s full of brilliant spots to eat, sit and watch the world go by. The new Seaview play area has been a massive hit with families, and the combination of coastal views, fresh seafood, ice cream and proper green space makes it one of the best free afternoons out you can have on the Gower Peninsula.
From Six Windsor Place, you’re ideally placed for all of it — step out the front door and you’re on the prom in three minutes.
